| This Wednesday, Rachel, Faye, Carmen and I had a coaching with Prof. Udani. It’s very nice to have such a coaching. I remembered that at the beginning of this semester, we also had a coaching and it’s the second time. Having the nice conversation with Prof. Udani, we discovered that we had changed a lot. One question which was asked by Prof. Udani impressed me deeply: Use two words to describe this semester. I was thinking for a moment. Then I answered “HC”. H stands for hard and C for change. To be honest, this semester is a rough time for me. At least this semester is harder than the last. I have to balance time between my studies in law, HC class and other activities. Now, it leaves the final exam! Since as the law students, we don’t have class after this week anymore. Besides the exam, I believe I had overcome those challenge. And now, I have to focus on my exam! On the other hand, C stands change. This semester I really changed a lot, so did my HC classmates. Especially after the video project and the workshop, we are getting more and more familiar and more likely become closer friends or families. Also, it’s my first time to communicate with those people on the society to have an interview. It’s my first time to help to hold such a great leadership workshop. Also, it’s my first time to be a MC by speaking English. All of us had a good try. Let’s keep it on and non-stop! Later on, we had our regular class. First of all, thanks for Prof. Udani giving time to us, the law students, to say something. This semester really is a very great experience for me. After that, Prof. Udani taught us the “HC clap”. I guess that it’s invented by Prof. Udani. : ) To be honest, at the beginning we were a little shy to do this. Later, it’s better. I will show you when having chances! Moreover, I really appreciate Prof. Udani awarded the “10 HC Bloggers”, they are Rocky, Christine, Polly, Megka, Vicky, Ivy, Cathy, James, Jackon and I! I’m really proud of it, also of being in HC. ~Sharing~ ~Sharing~ Echo was scared by the “HC clap”! As below, they are “HC 10 Bloggers”! Afterwards, we reviewed some theories such as the recycle of awareness, acceptance, action and reflection. I had written it in my blog previously. And the reflection really is a very important part and which makes us be different. Then, there was a sentence shown on the screen: YOU ARE YOUR LENS. I really like this sentence. Observing ourselves and others, we can know our strengths and weaknesses, so that we can develop our strengths and improve the weaknesses. LIFE IS TRUE LIFE, NOT A SHOW. We should find our purpose in life, grow up our potential and achieve the goal. Then we played a game which was called “Pik Pak Boom”. Actually, it’s a little bit like the game “Bing Pang Wow”. However, it’s more like the advanced version of “Bing Pang Wow”. It’s a little bit difficult for me to express how to play this game here. Maybe we can have a try when we get together. The important thing is that what we can learn from this game. Actually, we played this game as groups. We were with those classmates we were not very familiar. Through this game, we know that we really could cooperate with others well. So, just break the ice, and be closer! “IF” we believe, we “CAN”. “Pik Pak Boom”and the winners! Finally, I think that it might be my last time to write my blog before finishing the final exam. Dear classmates, let work hard and well together. Also, I am really looking forward to the buffet with you! | | |
| Congratulations! Finally, we all finished our leadership workshop successfully. This week, all of HC students were divided in two groups to hold two leadership workshops which were held on May 5 and May 8. I was one of the members to hold the leadership on May 5. We had a theme which was “IF”. What is “IF”? Actually, it stands for Inspiration and Facilitation. For this theme, our goals are: inspire students the concept and skills of leadership, learn the skills of facilitating team through team activities and identify personal strengths and action plan of students. Actually, by holding this workshop, we could also demonstrate our teamwork, put what we have learnt into practice and also, to spread out our knowledge, feeling and experience. In the IF leadership workshop, we divided in two parts in order to let the students learn what the inspiration and facilitation are. First of all, we were divided in different groups and there were two HC students in every group in order to lead them and also gave them some chances to lead sometimes, so that they could inspire others as well. The first part was to identify what they think about the characteristics of leaders. After, some of the students had some sharing and our MCs, Tony and James, also gave us a nice introduction of leadership styles after our brainstorm. In fact, the leaders can be divided in two big styles which are participative leadership and autocratic leadership. Participative leadership means the leader shares decision making with group members and it can be divided in details to consultative leaders, consensus leaders and democratic leaders. On the other hand, autocratic leadership shows most of the authority such as leading people by the position powers. However, it doesn’t mean that which is good and another one is bad. They both are good. The most important thing is our personality and our leading skills. Later on, we were very pleasure to invite John to teach and show us the Speed Stacks Sport. What is speed stacks sport? Just have a look. Now, you know what it is, right? Actually, we can find some common points in speed stacks sport and leadership. Both of them, we need to learn, practice more and the most important thing is “Never give up”! Later on, we also had a simple competition after learning how to play this sport. In the whole process, we could see that our members or the students encouraged others, inspired others. Of course, sometimes, we can’t only work hard, but also work well. However, in this case, what we focus is what we learnt in the whole process. After the exciting speed stacks sport, we entered the next part, marshmallow challenge again! We were given some noodles and tapes to build a strong and tall tower. And finally we had to put a marshmallow on the top of our tower. We only had 18 minutes. This time, there’s a little bit different. As the HC coordinators, we can’t give any help besides the help by words. The whole process was very exciting and we worked together in different positions. We could feel that it’s teamwork! However, we can’t only work hard, but also need to work well. The coming out result was that our towers weren’t strong enough and most of towers couldn’t stand straightly “again”! Anyway, it’s a great experience. In spite of working hard, we have to have some methods to lead us to the success. In the case, the methods may be the experience or the triangle structure. However, what I learn is that we can’t only have experience, but we also have to express and share our ideas and experience efficiently in order to put our experience into practice. However, I think my members also gained a lot! After having the relaxed tea break, we moved to the bigger place to have our next part, the fastest conveyor. We had to transport two cans, one Coca-Cola and one ball by using two ropes as a group. It’s a quite rough challenge! At the beginning, we should have a common consciousness to reach our common goal. And we needed to deal with the problems and overcome all difficulties such as sometimes we had different ideas to transport the things in a group. So, we discussed and got a workable method as a group. Then we got into the practice part. In this process, we had to cooperate together and carry out our plan before. Besides working hard, we had to work well. In this way, we could get success finally. Before the ending of the workshop, we had the action plan sharing. After this workshop, I guess and hope most of the students gained something. We asked them to write down and give a brief sharing in the groups and in class. And thanks for Tony to give us a nice conclusion. In this way, our workshop finished successfully. After that, our workshop holders stayed and gave a brief sharing. Actually, we really can do it better and this time we ignored some important things. Also, for most of us, including me, it’s the first time to hold such a workshop. It’s really a very great experience! As the first class of HC, I hope that we can really spread out our experience and spirit. Also, during the workshop, when the students were learning, the HC students were also learning. Learning is non-stop. We can learn from each other anytime, anywhere. I am also very happy that we could see so many potential leaders. I can see a ray of future. We have to work harder to set an example to others, so that we can change others, inspire others, also succeed and serve others in the coming future. Finally, always be H.O.S.T.! | | |
| This Wednesday, we got our eleventh class of HOUR2012. At the beginning of the class, we had a brainstorm first. It was concerned what is “isolation”. Actually, isolation can mean many things. Generally, it is the state of feeling alone and without friends or help. However, why the people feel alone, without friends or help? Maybe the person doesn’t interact with others, or others separate that person from others. What I think is that the people don’t isolated themselves naturally. Perhaps, they are afraid of others. They are afraid that others would hurt themselves. Thus, for protecting themselves, they isolated themselves. On the other hand, isolation is concerned two sides, the people who are isolated and the people who isolate others. Thus, combining two sides’ actions, isolation is created. In fact, isolation is not our nature since human beings live together naturally. The way to break the isolation is very easy. It’s that we don’t let the people who want to isolate themselves isolate themselves. Just open our WHOLE HEART AND MIND to others. It brought us to the topic of our class – dealing with difficult people. Later on, Prof. Dr. Udani asked us to write some notes of thanks to others. Do you remember H.O.S.T.? It means Happy, Optimistic, Serene and Thankful. Being thankful is very important in our daily life. Thanking to others, which is the simplest way to break isolation. Also, we can motivate others. This time, I received several papers from my classmates. Thank all of you! And I know that we are getting into the rough time. We are going to deal with the exams and prepare to go aboard. My dear classmates just work hard together! Then we got into the most exciting part of our lesson. It’s Marshmallow Challenge. We were divided in groups and four students per group. Then we were given some noodles and tapes to build a strong and tall tower. And finally we had to put a marshmallow on the top of our tower. We only had 18 minutes. The whole process was very exciting and we worked together. We could feel that it’s teamwork! However, we can’t only work hard, but also need to work well. The coming out result was that our towers weren’t strong enough and most of towers couldn’t stand straightly. Anyway, it’s a great experience. In spite of working hard, we have to have some methods to lead us to the success. In the case, the methods may be the experience or the triangle structure. Moreover, I thought that this challenge was quite fresh. Although I had made the tower before, all of those towers made of the newspaper. Using noodles and tapes was very interesting. If you haven’t tried, just try! I promise that it’s really very great! Last week, it’s Albert Zhang’s birthday. This class, we brought him a birthday cake and a song. HC is really very warm. I would like to appreciate Echo again since she made the cake and the cake was very good!
Then we entered our topic – dealing with difficult people. Leadership is the long term relationship between leaders and members. And there are many kinds of people. As a leader, we should get the hard and soft skills well, so that we can deal with every kind of people and lead the group to achieve the goal together. We have to understand what they think or worry and figure out the possible way to deal with. Therefore, we can cooperate well. Finally, I’m looking for our workshop on Wed and Sat. My dear HC classmates, let’s work hard and well together! If you are not HC student and you are interested in leadership, just come to our workshop. It’s on Wednesday and Saturday this week, 2pm to 6pm. If you have question, you can also call me. ; P | | |

There were really many activities in HC in this week. First of all, we had our forum series and this time it’s concerned the coal mine incident which happened in China these years, especially the incident in ShanXi. We were asked to have a brainstorm first. Then, we were divided in two groups to think of the questions on the stand of coal mine owner and the safety department of China. Thus, we could see things in different angles. After that, we had a debate part. It’s very exciting. For these incidents, some people think that we should punish the coal mine owner seriously. In the debate part, we debated about if we should punish the coal mine owner with death penalty. I think this forum was very meaningful. We could broaden our minds and tried to comment about the Central Government. In fact, we think that the Central Government could do it better. Not only focus on saving people, but focus on how to prevent these incidents as well. Life is once. We should treasure each life.
Later on, we had our regular lesson with Dr. Udani. First of all, Dr. Udani demonstrated a list to us and which was concerned what we expected. In the beginning of this semester, we had written our expectations such as learning leadership skills and using it well, training the communication skills, building up good relationship with classmates from different faculties, joining more social activities and so on. Yes, we hope what we expected. However, we can’t just hope. To achieve these goals, we should be cognitive, affective and behavioral. We should use our mind to learn more knowledge, use our emotion to influence others positively and get in action. What we need to pay attention is that emotion doesn’t mean good or bad. It depends on how we use. We shouldn’t use anger to influence others. We don’t run by emotion, but drive emotion.
After that, we were given some short papers to write some motivation sentence to our classmates. It’s very meaningful. In fact, in spite of that we didn’t write these papers, we should encourage people around us. Also, no matter what we do, give WHAM (whole heart and mind). It’s one of the leadership skills, isn’t it? Teamwork, motivation and coaching are also very important as a leader. Later on, we saw something very interesting! Just click in this site to review: http://www.vincentchow.net/2004/western-asian-culture-comparison It was concerned Western and Asian culture comparison. In this part, we could have a lesson. We should understand different things and also get a balance. From awareness to acceptance, from acceptance to actions, from actions to reflection and then from reflection to awareness, which consists a cycle. Actually, except from understanding form Western and Asian culture, we can also observe from people around us, even from ourselves since we are our “lens”.
Also, this Saturday, HCSA organized an activity to visit the Elderly Home. It’s my first time to join activity like this. I was very nervous and with a little excited. However, since it’s my first time to visit the Elderly Home, I don’t know what we should pay attention exactly. And now, I knew it such as chatting with the elderly, we should have some skills! For example, speak loudly and slowly, don’t touch them strongly since they are weak physically and so on. All of these things were experience! And I think it’s a very good experience. We chatted with them, sang for them and celebrated the birthday of them. And I think that we should also treasure the time with our family.

| Last week, Dr. Udani sent a link to us to take a test. This online test is concerned LEADERSHIP MOTIVATION. That means to test us if we are motivated to lead. Of course, as a HC student and as a leader, we should be motivated to lead. Thus, when I took this online test, I had a little bit pressure. It’s because we should be motivated to lead, right? However, if I get a very low mark, how about it? “Be H.O.S.T.”, I told myself. Also, I think that it’s a very good chance to know more about myself. If I get a high mark, it’s very good and I will keep improving and getting advanced. It I get a low mark, just work harder and harder! Let’s begin! I found that the questions seem focus on the feeling of leading people. Also, many questions mentioned how I behave as a leader. I totally strongly agree some of the questions and some of them I just get the average. Now, the result was figured out! There were three levels scores: Score - Comment 14-27 - This implies a low motivation to lead 28-55 - This implies some uncertainty over your motivation to lead. 56-70 - This implies a strong motivation to lead. Finally, I got 61 marks. The test result mentioned, “If you have found that you're strongly motivated to lead, and you're already a leader – great!” In fact, be motivated to lead, which is very great. We need to prepare everything. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail then. However, I don’t think this test is very accurate because it’s just the feeling or choices by me. However, it can be a reference to force us move forward. Although I got to the highest level, I think that it’s not enough because some of the questions which I can’t do it well. Also, our progress doesn’t have a limit! Here’s the link of the online test of LEADERSHIP MOTIVATION: http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_01.htm | | |
